A month ago, I decided to give myself a little challenge: to fill a sketchbook by using the page itself as a boundary. In my work, I often let my art float in the middle of the page, which I usually like and which often enhances the feel of the work. It gives the work a sense of space and lightness.
But what if I go outside my comfort zone? What if I look that page straight in the eye? Could I lay my drawings tight against the sides, let the plants be contained by the paper, or cast them in a certain shape?
It was not easy! For some, it may come naturally to draw shapes differently than you see them in nature, but for me, it often feels like I’m ‘not doing it right’. Like my old drawing teacher is disapprovingly looking over my shoulder. But so many wonderful things are possible when you draw more from your imagination!
So it was time for me to step outside that box and well, basically draw inside a box :)
In this video, I show you my sketchbook pages and explorations and some tips to help you start a similar sketchbook.
